Spring and fall are the best seasons to delve into the dense network of paths that run the island’s entire length and width, from the sea to the island’s highest point, Pagana at 498 m above sea level. The map of the trails includes 29 hiking routes accessible only on foot, including dirt trails and old mule tracks that connect the three villages, which in the past were ridden astride donkeys. Walking on the island’s trails takes you on a journey of colors, aromas, and breathtaking panoramic views of the Tuscan Archipelago and the opposite coast of the mainland. Surrounded by Mediterranean scrub, you can reach coves, hidden beaches and cliffs of uncommon beauty and spend a day of total peace and quiet far from the beaten tourist track and the hubbub of the towns. Through the support of the European Funds, the Municipality of Giglio Island with Proloco, has cleaned up and repaired trails that had been lost with the gradual abandonment of the countryside by farmers. Now a tourism-based economy, which had once caused the trail system to be abandoned, is what is returning it to life today.
The trails have different difficulty levels. Some can be walked with little difficulty and changes in altitude, whereas others are harder, both for their length and steepness. As the landscape is mainly hilly, some might choose to walk trails only downhill, getting to Giglio Castello by public transport or other motorized vehicles.
Regardless, you should always be well prepared before taking off. We suggest:
• wearing solid hiking shoes and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
• there are no rest stops or cafes along the trails, so it is important to bring enough water;
• carefully choose the time for your excursions. It’s not a problem in spring and fall, but in summer it is better to avoid the hottest hours especially on trails that are exposed to sun at all times.
• be aware of cell phone coverage! At some points in the island, you won’t get reception, especially on the west coast, so be sure to set up any arrangements for getting back, such as by taxi, before you leave;
• Fruit is a good snack to have on hand when you feel fatigued.
