Roman villa of Giannutri: historical background
The luxurious Roman villa on Giannutri was built or, rather, was made to build slaves, by the ancient senatorial family of the Domizi Enobarbi who, not satisfied with the work, had two others built: one on Monte Argentario and one on the island of Giglio at Castellari. The Domizi Enobarbi were important traders, also called "silversmiths" hence the name Argentario, the family included Gnaeus Domitius as well as husband of Agrippina as well as mother of the future emperor Nero.
The Villa in its heyday was 5 hectares in size., therefore covered almost the entire island of Giannutri, had a small port: the port of Cala Maestra still visible when you get there by ferry, and an ingenious aqueduct that collected, through a system of tanks, rainwater and distributed it throughout the island especially to the villa which was equipped with all the comforts of the time. Until 2004 the archaeological site of the Roman Villa belonged to private individuals precisely to the Count Gualtiero Adami, also known as "the Garibaldino." Having moved to the island in the late 1800s with his brother, he was cured of a serious lung disease from it. Following his recovery the Adami decided to stay on the island and spend the rest of his days here together with his beloved Marietta a young woman of 21 who was very much in love with the count.
During his stay it was the count himself who began the first excavations of the future archaeological site and carved out his home inside an ancient cistern. The site has been reopened, after long years of restoration, since 2015 and can still be visited accompanied by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park Guides.
The owners called it "the abode of the gods" and so it was thanks to its terrace overlooking a clear blue sea like few others, thanks to its precious marble coverings, its baths, and its elegant statues. Then in the summer of 2023 the famous mosaic of the minotaur also located in Cala Maestra was also finished being restored. Even today during the visit, thanks also to the knowledgeable narration of the Guides, one can still perceive the traces of the ancient beauty that this place enjoyed.
