Trail 1b Stone Road, Porto-San Giorgio-Castle
The trail starts from the provincial road, just above Giglio Porto and just before the village of Monticello. Passing through vineyards, it climbs uphill through scrubland on one of the walls of the mountain toward the Castello, and then climbs down, on the finish, inside an ilex grove that accompanies us all the way to below the walls of Giglio Castello. Halfway along you come across the ancient little church of San Giorgio, built there by the Gigliesi as a blessing for the water from the spring of the same name, formerly, but not so formerly, a water supply for the village below. You can see the whole Porto from here, and then you can see Monte Argentario and the whole coast as far as Giannutri.
It is recommended to approach this trail starting from a good physical training. The uphill part is very steep and in-your-face and lasts for almost the entire trail.
We also advise you, especially in the summer months to choose the less hot times of the day, to bring sufficient water and maybe a fruit to refresh you along the way. Once you arrive in Giglio Castello you will find everything you need, bars, groceries and even the wild drinking water source at which to fill your water bottles and prepare for the return trip.
