What to do on Giannutri Island
Giannutri Island, despite its small size, offers a wide variety of activities and attractions that provide an unforgettable experience.
One of Giannutri's main attractions is the ancient Roman Villa, a work of the Domizi/Enobarbi family. This archaeological site, rich in historical charm, can only be visited together with the Park's Official Guides, who offer valuable explanations about the life and architecture of that era.
The island also offers two wonderful trails to explore: the one that heads towards Montemario and the one that leads to the lighthouse of Punta del Capel Rosso. The latter, located at the north end of the island, provides a breathtaking view of the sea and the other islands of the archipelago.
Don't miss a visit to the Grottoni, large caves that are home to herring gulls. From here, if you are lucky, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the mysterious sunken island of Zanara. Your Giannutri adventure could begin with a boat arrival at Cala Maestra, a name derived from the mistral, a wind that blows from the northwest.
Another option is to arrive at Cala Spalmatoio, where visitors can admire the remains of the Roman harbor, an ancient temporary port of call for ships transiting the Tyrrhenian Sea. How to reach the island of Giannutri?
If you are planning a visit to the enchanting Giannutri Island, there is some practical information you should know to plan your trip.
The main starting point for reaching Giannutri is Porto Santo Stefano, located on the Argentario Promontory.
You can park your car directly in the village, in the areas we point out to you, and walk to the ferry boarding area, at Piazzale Candi 8 - Ferry Terminal, at the Port of the Valley. From here, the Maregiglio shipping company offers year-round connections to the island.
Regular connections from Porto Santo Stefano to Giannutri are guaranteed twice a week, every Wednesday and Saturday.
Departures are scheduled at 10:00 am from Porto Santo Stefano, returning from Giannutri at 4:00 pm. During the summer season, the frequency of connections increases, with additional runs on Mondays, Thursdays, Sundays, and an additional afternoon departure on Fridays. An alternative is to reach Giannutri from Giglio Island. From June 20 until about September 15, Maregiglio offers a direct connection on Thursdays, departing from Giglio Porto at 10:30 a.m. and returning from Giannutri at 4 p.m.
Departing from Giglio Porto every Thursday, you will have the opportunity to try two interesting mini-cruises, always carried out by our company, Maregiglio.
Tips if we visit Giannutri a single day
It is important to note that Giannutri is not allowed to ferry cars or other vehicles for tourism purposes. The island is protected by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, and its environmental delicacy requires a responsible attitude from visitors.
If you plan to visit the island during the day, it is recommended that you wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water, food and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. If you are passionate about snorkeling, don't forget your mask, fins and snorkel to explore the island's crystal clear waters.
Remember to have respect for the ecosystem, not to introduce non-native animal species, and not to leave any trash traces or debris. Giannutri Island is a jewel to be preserved and respected to ensure that future generations can enjoy its beauty and tranquility.
